He said it with such genuine conviction that I didn't have the heart to tell him how unflattering was his attempted compliment. I don't blame folks. On impulse, they want to encourage and uplift, and they're only saying the first thing that comes to mind as I approached. After all, I did, in fact, lose quite a bit of weight in my face. Sadly, my face has a high metabolism from active eating while my belly ponders the deeper questions of life. No matter how often I try to encourage my face to share his secrets with my gut, they're both content to keep the status quo. The next time I smile and say thank you, please know that moments after, my every contemplation includes a wrestling match between goodwill and hostility. Guess who wins?
The highlight of my week was joining my beloved, Debra, on her first ever 5K race. I'm thoroughly impressed with Debra's performance. She laid down a solid PR at 10:45 mm and missed the podium for her age group by only one position (4th place). It's not hard to understand why I enjoy running so much when I get to participate in lasting memories with the love of my life.
The Peach Jam was held here at our local Fowler Park in Cumming, Georgia. It started at the fire-station, ran through the greenway and ended on the running track.
This was the last time that I saw Debra until the turn-around...
Debra missed the podium by one place... bummer!
I had a PR (since starting back up) and was pleased with not coming in last in my age group.
It has been a while since I enjoyed a run with my dad. During our Spring Break vacation, Debra and I got the pleasure of two runs with my Pops which were a complete joy. We enjoyed a challenging run along Juno Beach at the Atlantic shoreline. Debra managed the full 10K distance while I struggled with the heat and humidity and only laid down 4 miles. The second run was a 5K combination of Palm Beach Gardens neighborhood and local city park track. I was feeling strong on this day and laid down a fairly decent run. What a pleasure being able to share this memory with Dad and Debra and fit enough to make this occasion.
What happens when you put fitness on a collision course with fairy-dust? Mayhem... complete mayhem! Would you believe that Debra and I got up each morning over the course of 4 days at Disney and kept our schedule of running a 5K before heading out to the Disney parks? Not only did we do this but we also chose other fitness alternatives such as walking from the parking lots to the Disney parks. The net result is that we didn't gain as weight much as I expected. I only managed 2 lbs. of weight gain for the entire week; which is saying a lot given all of the indulgences we partook during this vacation. The Flower and Garden Festival at EPCOT was a complete joy!
On the first day we ran between the "All-star" hotels...
On the following days, we settled on this nice RunDisney side walk track in front of the hotels. Up and back was our 5K distance and didn't involve a lot of crazy last minute turns.
Without rest, the work is nothing but drudgery. We're in Florida this week for Spring Break vacation. Debra and I are stoked about surpassing our weight-loss goals and putting our fitness in such a place as to enjoy vacation to the fullest. We plan on enjoying edible guilty pleasures while maintaining some fitness in the form of jogging.
